Cannabis Uses and Benefits – A Brief Primer

In: Health

Despite the numerous benefits of cannabis, there are also some significant downsides. While the drug seems promising for chronic pain, cancer patients, and multiple sclerosis sufferers, it poses significant risks for car crashes, psychosis, and respiratory problems. The drug has also been linked to pregnancy-related problems. Nevertheless, despite the potential benefits of cannabis, it is important to note that there is still much more research needed to determine its proper use.

Cannabidiol

Cannabidiol from Puffs Haven is one of the most important compounds found in cannabis. This compound has several benefits, including neuroprotection, and has demonstrated potent antinociceptive properties in animal models of pain and anxiety. It also modulates dopamine and serotonin, making it an appealing alternative to opioid-based treatments for chronic pain. Despite the potential for misuse and diversion, there are currently no well-studied, approved cannabidiol products.

THC

The use of THC has been linked to reduced symptoms of psychiatric disorders and a reduction in motor skills in some individuals. This finding is based on 21 different studies with a total sample size of almost 240,000 individuals. Many researchers believe that these effects are related to THC, which is also present in marijuana leaves. Several budding biopharmaceutical companies are now working to develop new drugs derived from the cannabis plant.

CBD

While there is no solid scientific evidence to support the use of marijuana, it does appear that many people can benefit from the CBD found in cannabis. In a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers found that CBD can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the heart and prevent damage to the heart in diabetic mice. This finding is encouraging, given the current treatments for the condition, which primarily target inflammation.

Terpenes

Besides providing a bouquet of scents, terpenes also have various functions in the cannabis plant. These compounds can have therapeutic effects for cannabis consumers. The terpenes are naturally-occurring compounds found in the trichomes of female cannabis plants, which contain resin glands. Here’s a brief primer on the different terpenes and their uses and benefits.

Cancer

Recent research on medicinal cannabis has revealed that it can kill or inhibit cancer cells without having a negative effect on normal cells. Dr Matt Dun’s research involved a biotech company called Australian Natural Therapeutics Group (ANTG), which produces a cannabis variety with a THC level of less than 1%, known as Eve. The plant contains high levels of a compound called cannabidiol. For cancer treatment, it is essential to know the full benefits of cannabis for your condition.

ADD

There are many benefits of marijuana for ADD, but is it appropriate for patients with this disorder? There are many varying opinions on the effectiveness of cannabis. For instance, the effects on ADD children and adolescents were similar when compared to the effects on children without ADD. Some experts say the best choice for patients with ADD is to work with a mental health provider to determine whether cannabis is right for them. For those with ADD, a therapist may be an ideal option.

ADHD

This study sought to characterize the sources of online information related to marijuana, alcohol, and drug use, specifically cannabis, for ADHD. It found that 72% of adult Internet users and 84% of adolescents surveyed said they often use the Internet to find health-related information. Previous studies have shown that Internet users seek health-related information in a wide range of topics, including cannabis. But, the purpose of this study was to understand what people are looking for online regarding marijuana and ADHD in particular.

Levodopa-induced dyskinesia

Researchers have discovered a new drug that works on levodopa-induced dyskineses in mice. This drug works on dopamine receptors and reduces inflammation in the brain, which protects the brain from damage from neuroinflammation, a condition that contributes to levodopa-induced dyskinesia. Although it hasn’t been clinically tested, the drug is an alternative for Parkinson’s patients.

Epilepsy

A new study reveals that medical marijuana from Medical Cannabis Dispensary Toronto may have a positive effect on children with epilepsy. Researchers from the Realm of Caring Foundation and the Johns Hopkins Medicine Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, conducted an open-label trial involving 162 children with epilepsy. Patients were treated with cannabis-based extracts of the non-psychoactive chemical CBD. The patients’ symptoms improved, and most reported improvement.
