- Start by Forming a Pure Sequence
Forming a pure sequence is essential in an Indian Rummy game. If you declare your hand without a pure sequence, you will lose the game instantly. So the very first step of the game should be to focus on making a pure sequence. A pure sequence consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. In the example above, there is a possibility of creating a pure sequence by adding one desired card to 6♦-8♦ or 5♠-6♠. You will need 7♦ to complete the former sequence and 7♠ or 4♠ to complete the latter. This can be achieved by carefully drawing and discarding cards. Use the “Sort” button to group your cards at the start of the game.
- Create a 2nd Sequence (pure or impure)
While playing rummy online, it is important to form at least one pure sequence to win the game. However, you might still lose if you create one pure sequence and 3 sets. Here the catch is to make two sequences or more. After making a pure sequence, you can focus on forming impure sequences. An impure sequence consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit and the Joker is used as a replacement for a missing card. In the above example, the group 6♦ 8♦ and 5♠ 6♠ can be made into impure sequences by adding J♠ (wild Joker) or a printed Joker to each group.
- Minimize Your Points
The winner of an online rummy game gets zero points. Yes, you heard that right. Aces, Jokers, Queens, and Kings are worth 10 points each while the numbered cards are worth their face values. If you get face cards, discard them early on to reduce your points. However, don’t be hasty as they might help create a pure sequence. In the above example, Q♣ and K♥ should be discarded.
- Collect Connecting Cards
After creating a pure sequence and another sequence (pure or impure), you can start making sets or sequences with the remaining cards. For that, you will need to collect connecting cards. Suppose you want to make a sequence and you have 6♠ and 9♠ in your hand. You will need either 7♠ and 8♠ or one of them and a Joker to complete the sequence. Therefore, you should start collecting connecting cards. Similarly, when you need to form a set, you will require cards of the same rank from different suits. If you have two such cards, you can use a Joker to complete the set. This trick is very useful in rummy cash games and it can help you meld your cards faster.
In the above example, J♠ (wild Joker) and the printed Joker can be used to form sets and sequences.
- Estimate Your Opponents’ Cards
Keep an eye on your opponents’ moves, especially when they pick cards from the discard pile. Suppose you discard 5♥ and one of your opponents picks it up. Be alert and do not discard any connecting cards (4♥ or 6♥) and cards of the same rank (5♠, 5♣ or 5♦). This might help you to prevent your opponents’ chances of winning the game.
